If your scheduled automatic payment didn't go through, don't worry — this happens for a variety of reasons, and most are easy to fix. This article explains why payments fail and what you can do next.
Why automatic payments fail
Automatic payments can fail for several reasons, many of which have nothing to do with your account balance. Here are the most common causes:
Your card information changed
- This includes updated expiration dates or CVV numbers, even if your card number stayed the same
- Make sure your payment details are current in your account
Your bank declined the transaction
- Banks sometimes decline charges they don't recognize, especially if it's your first payment with us
- Check your account around the time of your first scheduled payment to confirm it goes through
Your card was frozen
- Your bank may freeze your card if they suspect unusual activity
- You may have frozen your card yourself and forgotten about your scheduled payment
Insufficient funds
- At the time of the transaction, there wasn't enough money in your account
- Our system processes payments in the early morning (between midnight and 3 a.m.), often before transfers or direct deposits clear
- If you're timing payments with your paycheck, schedule your payment for one day after your direct deposit to avoid this issue
Daily withdrawal limit exceeded
- Many debit cards have daily withdrawal limits to protect against overdrafts
- Avoid making other large payments on the same day as your automatic payment
What to do next
If your payment failed and your card information is up to date, contact your bank or card provider. Let them know to expect these transactions so they aren't flagged as fraud.
You have two options after a failed payment:
Make a one-time manual payment
This gets you back on track with your original payment schedule.
Let the system adjust your remaining payments
If you don't make a manual payment, the missed amount will be divided evenly across your remaining scheduled payments.
Example: If you had 4 payments of $300 remaining and one fails, your next 3 payments will be $400 each.
Important to know
- After 2 failed payments in a row, you'll be automatically switched from the automatic payment plan to the manual payment plan
