Visiting Machu Picchu is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in the world, and we want to make sure you feel fully prepared before you arrive. One thing that surprises some travelers is that Machu Picchu operates on a designated circuit system, meaning your path through the ruins is pre-assigned based on your ticket. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Does Machu Picchu Use a Circuit System?
To protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Peruvian government strictly regulates the number of visitors allowed inside Machu Picchu each day. A limited number of tickets are issued per circuit, per time slot. Once they're gone, they're gone. This means that ticket availability is largely out of our hands, and we are never able to guarantee a specific circuit for any traveler.
The Circuits: What's the Difference?
Circuit 1: The Classic Route
This route takes you up to the highest vantage points, where you'll be treated to jaw-dropping panoramic views set against the Andean mountains. You'll be among some impressive ruins, including the upper terraces, and the views are truly spectacular. That said, you will not walk through the main ruins on this circuit - those are viewed from a distance rather than explored up close.
Circuit 2: The Classic Experience
Circuit 2 is the most well-rounded way to experience Machu Picchu and the one we always strive to secure for our travelers. It combines the famous panoramic viewpoints with a thorough walk through the core of the site, giving you the best of both worlds.
Circuit 3: The Lower Urban Route
Circuit 3 takes visitors through the lower urban areas of Machu Picchu. The sections of the site tied to daily Inca life, ceremony, and royalty. It's a meaningful and historically rich experience, but it's important to note that this circuit does not include the classic panoramic viewpoint.
Which Circuit Will I Be On?
We always do our best to book travelers on Circuit 2, as we feel it offers the most complete experience of Machu Picchu. However, due to governmental restrictions and the strict daily ticket limits, we are never able to guarantee a specific circuit for any traveler.
For travelers who joined the trip as a late enrollment, there is a higher likelihood that you may be placed on a different circuit than the rest of your group - most commonly Circuit 1. That said, this isn’t always the case, and it's entirely possible you'll end up on the same circuit as your group. We simply can't know for certain until tickets are confirmed.
It's also worth noting that if Machu Picchu tickets are completely sold out at the time of your late booking request, we may be unable to accommodate a late enrollment for this destination.
If you do end up on a different circuit, you'll be in great hands and accompanied by a local expert guide who knows Machu Picchu inside and out. And as a late enrollment, there's a good chance you won't be alone; other late additions to the trip are likely to be exploring alongside you.
Can I Request a Specific Circuit?
Unfortunately, we are unable to request or guarantee specific circuits on behalf of travelers. Ticket allocation is determined by the Peruvian government and is based on real-time availability at the time of booking. We always advocate for the best possible experience for our travelers with the options available to us.
